5 Tips for Getting Started in Path of Exile

With the release of the Ascendency expansion in early 2016, there has never been a better time to explore Path of Exile’s world of Wraeclast. Before you venture forth and start slaying monsters, keep these five tips in mind.

1) Research Your Build Before You Start
Before you start playing the game, take the time to familiarize yourself with your chosen class, their skill trees and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Unlike most action role-playing games that let you freely redistribute your skill points, in PoE the skill point distribution is almost permanent. While there is an item that will let you redistribute skill points, it is very expensive and hard to come by. Knowing the best ways to distribute your skill points can avoid having a max level character who is essentially worthless.

2) Priortize Life Nodes

When distributing skill points, make it a priority to always put points into Life Nodes whenever possible. In PoE, having a large health pool is just as important, if not more important, than how much damage you can do. Being able to outlast your enemy is a huge advantage in this game and turning your character into a glass cannon, i.e. one that can dish out the pain but not take it, is a huge mistake.

3) Upgrade Your Stash

If you’re enjoying the game and feel like you’re going to play it on a regular basis, one of the first things you should do is upgrade your stash to hold more weapons and items. Your stash is accessible among all characters on an account, letting you freely share weapons, armour and other items between your characters. You can upgrade your stash using real money through the online game store accessible via the in-game menu.

4) Bring Lots of Potions

If you’re the sort of player who cut your teeth on newer action role-playing games like Diablo 3, the concept of buying and stocking health potions is a foreign one. While in Diablo 3 you get one unlimited health potion that is on a timer, in PoE your health potions must be bought and are consumed permanently upon use. Before heading out, always make sure you purchase a large number of health potions, and make sure to get at least five more than you’ll think you need just in case you run into trouble.

5) Team Up with Friends

While this game differs from other action role-playing games in many ways, one concept remains the same: The game is easier with friends. While your enemies’ hit points go up for each additional player in the game, the increased damage output means you’ll still kill enemies faster than if you were playing alone. In addition, you’ll find more weapons and armor upgrades due to the party bonus for dropped loot.

Have fun!

Path of Exile thrives on its difficulty and is well known for having a steep learning curve. However, by keeping these five tips in mind, you’ll be able to mitigate a lot of the early pitfalls that new players fall into. Go forth into Wraeclast and fulfil your destiny!
